Active measures was a soviet propaganda strategy deployed during the 1920's on up through the Cold War. Agents seed misinformation and rumors about high ranking officials in the United States in order to create chaos and distrust among us citizens. They were extremely successful in promoting racial tensions throughout the 70's and 80's as well as giving rise to conspiracy theories about assassinations of leaders such as Martin Luther King and John F Kennedy. Much of the program was revealed by a defector named Sergei Tretyakov. Although most of the KGB resources that fueled active measures have largely been dismantled, the strategy itself studied and understood by modern governments and businesses today. Do they live on in other parts of our society?
